Museum of maps

This is a midterm model of my design for a cartogrpahy museum.

My intent is to critique the traditional museum. The design is based upon a circulatory concept, that is intended to over come the weakness of the two kinds of museum circulation systems that are used, the path and the grid. I do this by blending the strengths of the two forms of circulation, and creating a building that consists of unbroken rooms that flow into one another. This gives you freedom close to that of the grid, and direction close to that of the path, without the weaknesses of each.

In addition to this i have taken and created the form based on a mapping concept. I have used columns that are pointed directly at major cities on other continents, straight though the earth, so as to give you an understanding of your place in the world. These also serve as the primary structure to hold up the building.

Also all the floors are sloped at 5 or less degrees, so that the entire building can be walked though without a single flight of stairs, it also makes it ADA accessible. (this also makes the floors in the model seem a bit crooked, which is b/c they actually ARE. however they are also correct. so don't you go thinking i messed up )
